Moriara – Mediterranean Spain’s Jewel in the Crown

Often regarded as the `San Tropez’ of the Costas, this tiny fishing village has blossomed into the most appealing and unspoilt little resort on the Costa Blanca. Located midway between Javea and Calpe and between the classical cities of Valencia and Alicante, each with their own international airports; Moraira is within 15minutes of the A7/E15 Autopista.

The development of Moraira and its neighbouring towns and villages has been achieved by strict planning controls regarding build density, protected green areas and a limit of just four residential storeys for apartments, which has created a distinctive `low-rise´ character to the town and surrounding area – uniquely with just one set of traffic lights within the town, and no traffic congestion!

The demand for property here remains strong and consistent and, given the very finite supply, and the increasing rarity of building land for additional development, this is very much blue chip investment territory! Moraira is very similar to Benissa insomuch as its terrain is of undulating hillsides and slopes, planted with vineyards and olive, almond and orange groves. Moraira has an inland twin town called Teulada, from which a broad valley sweeps gently down to meet the Mediterranean at Moraira’s shore. This valley adds further to Moraira’s distinctive character as, for several kilometres, the valley bottom consists of protected vineyards which extend down to the coastal road in the middle of the village. The gentle slopes to both sides of this valley cradle a deceptive number of private villas, nestling between the palm trees and pines, which help maintain a verdant and mellow feel to this residential landscape. Apart from the lack of high-rise, the other feature conspicuously absent in Moraira is any significant number of hotels. This again, adds to Moraira’s special `feel’ – not only in structural terms – but also the added bonus is that virtually the only tourists who stay in Moraira are either villas owners or those privately renting villas; a pleasant bi-product of this is that Moraira has a more stable, year round population – not overrun in the summer, not deserted in the winter!

The quaint, typically Spanish village lies between the marina and fishing harbour with its adjacent daily fish market, and the partially pedestrianised village centre, with its old church surrounded by pavement cafes and bars, and a fine range of cosmopolitan shops and restaurants for all tastes and budgets.
