Lakeside Luxury In The Alps

15.08.16

Summer has arrived, temperatures have finally warmed up and the sun is shining. The allure of lakeside luxury in the Alps has never been stronger.

Could these be the next growth regions for Alpine property development?

Interlaken in Switzerland and Annecy in France boast historic town centres, spectacular views and great access to ski areas.

Interlaken sits just below the famous Jungfrau ski region, with spectacular views and one of the most famous peaks in the world only a cog railway journey away. The resort is between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, with canals running through the town and pretty satellite villages dotted around the area.

The scenery here is breath-taking, and easily one of the largest reasons to choose Interlaken as your base in the Alps. Combine that with the plethora of water sports and adventure activites available and with the superb access to cities (and airports) such as Geneva and Zurich the appeal of this town for a luxury Alpine home becomes clear.

Interlaken has received a surge of investment over the past five years or so with several major developments emerging. The Bergee Village in particular looks set to become an oasis of luxury in the Swiss Alps. A fully pedestrianised apartment complex, with plenty of light and stunning views featuring two high quality restaurants, a wellness centre and several indoor and outdoor pools, it is easy to see why the first phase of this development sold out and why the latest phase is causing such a stir.

With two bedroom apartments starting at 490,160 CHF, this development also presents great value for a basecamp in the Swiss Alps. Similarly, the Rychegarte Residence, a selection of brand new luxury apartments in the picturesque village of Unterseen, is another example of a new luxury development in these lakeside regions.

Across the border in France, Annecy is one of the easiest towns to get to in the French Alps. There are regular buses from Geneva, and trains from Paris and Lyon. While Interlaken boasts stunning views of the Eiger, Annecy is known as the Venice of the French Alps delivering a different, more historic breed of picturesque scenery.

It might not be as explicitly linked to a ski resort as Interlaken, but Annecy is close to a number of fantastic French ski resorts. Most notably, La Clusaz is within easy reach. Famous freeskier Candide Thovex is one of a number of influential skiers to call Annecy home, and La Clusaz his home turf.

Like Interlaken, Annecy is an increasingly busy region for property investors and second home buyers and there are some stunning villas on the market. The Chalet sur le Lac is one such example - a 6 bedroom chalet with incredible views sat on the shores of lake Annecy and under 60 mins from the resort of La Clusaz - but these kinds of opportunities are numerous and increasingly popular.

What's clear, through the ongoing development in these areas, is that these areas are on the rise.  Whether this is due to the idyllic landscapes that the lakes of the Alps offer, in particular for wealthy buyers from the Middle East and South Asia, or whether the attractive prices and year-round appeal of these locations is becoming more obvious, it seems that the lakes are the Alps could be key growth regions for second homes over the coming years.
