Come Back Stability – All Is Forgiven

The political uncertainty resulting from the election of a minority government will likely encourage more of us to put off any thought of moving to pastures new for a few months. Add to this, a property slow down which has already led to three consecutive months of falling house prices and the longest period of down turn since 2009 and we might be forgiven for feeling a little lacklustre at the prospect of a change of property scene. Theresa May has hit the nail on the head in one respect however - we desperately need a period of stability to quash uncertainty - a shift away from the Dark Side paralysis stifling the current housing market towards greater liquidity. Whether she can deliver the goods is only a matter of time.

As to further unrest brewing from this election - the hopelessness we are seeing on the ground about not being able to get on the housing ladder is gathering momentum. The young have taken a stand and voted overwhelmingly for change. The solution? Well, politicians will have to give far more consideration to the needs of the next generation which should translate to more help for first-time buyers, perhaps extending Help to Buy so that it covers older properties as well as new build, and dealing with affordability issues plus more help on stamp duty. If there's one thing all the parties agree on, it's the need for more housing - let's hope it's a priority focus for whichever coalition pact is created.
